Nasal Sinus Congestion

Nasal sinus congestion is a common problem that almost everyone will experience at some point in heir lives. It affects babies, children, and adults alike, and it can be a reaction to certain atmospheric factors, a genetic predisposition, or an illness that indicates problems in the immune system. Sinus nasal congestion can be a minor annoyance for some, while in others, it can lead to serious problems with breathing, headaches and migraines, concentration, sleeping, hearing, and speech. Related conditions that can cause, worsen, or be worsened by nasal and sinus congestion include asthma, sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia, and poor concentration. Nasal inflammation and sinus congestion are closely related, because nasal inflammation (the swelling of the blood vessels in the nose) leads to the sinuses and nose being congested or “stuffy.”

Many people find relief in over the counter medications and nasal sprays. While sinus nasal congestion can be temporarily relieved from using these products, they are generally not practical for long term usage. In fact, nasal and sinus congestion medications, especially sprays, carry an extremely high risk of addiction and dependence. This is due to the fact that they often provide temporary but immediate relief, causing the sufferer to turn to them each and every time he or she experiences nasal discomfort. Once the product has worn off, nasal inflammation and sinus congestion come back, sometimes with a greater voracity, causing larger and larger quantities of the product to be needed. Obviously, this is a vicious cycle that should be avoided at all costs. Luckily, however, there are many home remedies than can provide relief without the danger of addiction.

A great deal of individuals find that increasing their general health and boosting their immune systems’ strength can provide great relief. Good ways to do this include eating a healthy, well balanced diet; drinking plenty of fluids; taking vitamins, especially vitamin C; and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and other harmful products. Exercising indoors is also a good idea, as this allows one to enjoy the health benefits of exercise without being subjected to airborne allergens like pollen. Many also find that practicing better cleaning habits, including getting hidden dust out of corners and crevices, vaccumming up pet hair daily, and not using heavily scented cleaning products is helpful. Avoiding perfumes, air fresheners, powders, and scented soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergents can also be key in treating chronic nasal congestions. Sleeping with a humidifier or vaporizer on or having regular steam treatments can also be helpful.

If, however, none of these remedies help, individuals should visit a doctor to determine what is causing their problem and what should be done about it. Nasal sinus congestion should not interfere with one’s life.
